From the outset of recording “Sparse Illumination”, Blackout Transmission lead songwriter/arranger, C. Goett, envisioned calling upon musical comrades to reimagine these tracks through remixes and alternate interpretations. By activating the national Etxe Records community and local Los Angeles network, “Radiance + Variance: Remixes and Alternate Interpretations” advances new experimental and more electronic approaches to the original songs tracked with Scott Holmes (Highlands, Dream Machine LB).

What started with a few calls and emails to explore interest quickly bloomed almost accidentally, into a full seven-song extended player. The new treatments on these tracks feature radical re-workings by long-time collaborator Secret Wilderness (creating two fearless, techno stomper remixes channeling early Warp Records and dance-forward New Order vibes respectively); Washington DC-based musician Steven Rubin (a meditative groove with Beatles White Album psych vibes); Etxe Records artist Ars Phoenix’s Jonn Gauntletier (an early 90’s Depeche Mode inspired brooding trip); fellow Etxe Records and Los Angeles-based artist Magic Wands (a revved-up and ethereal rendition begging for repeat plays); Teenage Wrist’s Marshall Gallagher (an alternate mix with perfect sheen and propulsion); and Etxe Records post-punk duo Replicant Eyes (a nihilistic, industrial remix with Dan Gonzalez adding layered, additional vocals).

Taking a similar approach to the album artwork, the band commissioned Jeff Holmes to take the original Robin Gnista artwork and stretch the source material to establish a visual that connected to the EP. Jeff nailed it.

This release is an intentional statement of community. Each artist added their unique musical DNA to the original tracks creating a 7-song journey that pushes the boundaries of the original songs into something wholly new and vibrant. Blackout Transmission is grateful to all those that added their creativity and musicality. We hope you enjoy!
